Yesterday as persons turned up at the Georgetown Public Hospital’s mortuary to claim the remains of their loved ones, they were greeted with rotting corpse.
One man, Abdool Ganie, who spoke with this newspaper amidst tears, said that his 68- year-old mother died last Friday and when he turned up at the hospital yesterday morning, his mother’s remains were swollen and decomposed.
He said that his mother was scheduled for a post mortem examination this morning but when he and other family members arrived they could barely recognise the body.
Ganie said that his mother died of a sudden heart attack and when they checked with the mortuary on Saturday everything was fine.
“If they know they had a problem with the mortuary they could have contacted the families and ask them to remove the dead to another parlour.”
“This is the worst thing that happen to me. Now I can’t even hold a proper funeral. We have to go bury her right away.”
Several other families had similar stories. A source at the hospital mortuary told this newspaper early yesterday that persons who did not require post mortem examination removed their loved ones to another mortuary in the city.
But the GPHC stated that it is merely a rumour being circulated about he mortuary not functioning.
“The Management wishes to state unequivocally that this is only a rumour and there is absolutely no truth to it. It must be noted, for the sake of clarification, that over the weekend, it was observed that the motor of the Mortuary’s refrigerator was working; however, there was no cooling taking place.
“Immediately upon this discovery, efforts were made to contact a specialist, but owing to the fact that it was the weekend, there was some difficulty in making immediate contact with the noted individual.
He was subsequently reached and the problem was rectified (on Monday).
All bodies sent to respective funeral homes were done as usual, relatives came and the bodies were released for burial.
However, GPHC regrets any inconvenience anyone may have faced due to the unforeseen problem”.
