It was a vintage Message that tore up the track and send a strong signal that it is still the horse to beat as it cantered to convincing victory to take the feature C Class Banks DIH sponsored 1400M contest, when the Norman Singh Memorial Turf Club staged its Grand one day horserace meet on Sunday at the club’s facility at Bel Air Park NO 6, West Coast Berbice.
The Message categorized D2 and running out of the Colin Elcock stable of No 13 Village, Hermitage No 19 Road, East Coast Berbice showed that its recent lay off from the track, was for a good cause, as it won with consummate ease to take the hefty $450,000 winners money and the Banks DIH trophy which was presented by Banks DIH Special events manager Mortimer Stewart.
Piloted by Paul Delph and known more for its strong finishes, the Message decided to take the bull by the horns as it tore out of the gates, setting a searing gallop down the back stretch as its opponents played catch up. Madame Butterfly moved up to challenge, but found the going too tough and soon flopped out of contention as the Message was all alone winning by a considerable margin.
A fast finishing Tropical Passion of the Mootoo stable came in second ahead of Home Bush Baby and Sweet Revenge.
Jens Pride owned by Steve Mootoo of the Rumour’s racing stable was equally as impressive in winning the Co feature Norman Singh memorial Derby for three year old animals Bred and Born in Guyana and the West Indies.
With Jamaican Jockey Michael Findlay in the stirrups, there was no stopping the Jamaican Bred animal as it won from gate to pole to take the $330,000 top prize in the one mile race. There were mild celebrations for the connections of the Elcock stables as Celebration Time came home second ahead of Sabrina Pride of the Jagdeo Stable and Zelona.
It was rejoicing time for the connections of the Jagdeo stables as ‘Better than Gold’ ridden by Rupert Ramnauth struck gold for its owners in taking the Two years old 1000M event for animals bred and Born in Guyana and the West Indies as it started its campaign in Guyana on a winning note. The win was worth $250,000 and the Mike’s Pharmacy Trophy. Big Impact, Irish Girl and Pay Day had their hopes dashed as they had to settle for the lesser positions.
Night Crescendo of The Crawford stable shone brightly with a devastating run down the home stretch to take the highly competitive F class 1200M event and the Guyenterprize trophy along with the $240,000 first prize. Top of the Line, Laura Lee in Flight and newly imported Mamzelle rounded out the money.
The G&H class 1200M event which had a winning money of $200,000 ended in controversial fashion as Maracas Star of The Jumbo jet stable and Prixie Fire of the Customs stable were awarded a dead heat after the authorities could not decide which of the animal crossed the line first. The controversy that erupted only emphasised the point that there is need for photo finish equipment.
The Gap and One of Kind were the other two horses that place.
It was reality time in the I class race which was won by Dream Girl of the Chico Singh stable and ridden by Mark Vassie as it got home in a tight finish from DE Gump, Stormy Water and Lyana to take home the $140,000 winnings in the 1200M contest.
The I 3 race for maiden/non winners and sponsored by Digicel was taken by Little Spike of the Lenny Singh Stable as it took home the $130,000 purse over 1200M. Mona Lisa, Savion and Royal Time copped the other positions.
Lenny O Halo of the Beaton Stable had the better of Black Beauty in a ding dong battle as it won the event for Division 2 and 3 horses. The win was worth $120,000 in another 1200M event. No Body Knows and Natural Black were the others in podium positions.
The Elcock Stable and the Rumour’s racing stables were the outstanding entities on show. Apprentice Jockey, Mark Vassie and season rider Yap Drepaul were the two outstanding jockeys at the meet. They received accolades compliments of Ramesh Sunich of the trophy stall of Bourda Market.
Over 70 horses took part in the day’s proceedings which had over $3.5M up for grabs.
The organisers are expressing thanks to the sponsors who assisted in making the event a success. Among them are; Trophy Stall Bourda Market, Dalip Trading, Banks DIH Ltd, Digicel, Imperial Manufacturers Ltd, Cummings Electrical, Rohit Lumber Yard, Christopher Hall, Goodwood Racing Service, Ramchand Auto Spares, Guyenterprise and Jumbo Jet auto Sales.
