Hundreds, mostly women, turned up at the Hampshire Civic Centre, Corentyne, Berbice for the Region Six launch of the Woman of Worth (WOW) initiative being undertaken by the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security with financing from the Guyana Bank of Trade and Industry (GBTI).
The programme is mainly for single-parent women who are interested in starting a small business; they can now access micro-loans from the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI), which aims at financial empowerment.
Under the Women of Worth (WOW) initiative, the government, in collaboration with the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI), has set aside $500M to assist single female parents.
To access the loan, the beneficiaries must first be registered with the Ministry provided some other conditions are met.
The programme targets women and if they are interested for sums from $100,000 to $250,000 through the programme which will attract a six per cent interest rate per annum.
The repayment period is two years; persons who are interested must be earning under $40,000 a month and should be between the ages 18 and 60 years.
Minister of Human Services, Priya Manickchand, speaking at the launching hailed the programme as one which will generate income for many families and says that it is a government initiative that is long overdue.
She said that the programme is a “life changing one” and encouraged women to make maximum use of the opportunity.
She said that any information on the programme can be obtained from the Ministry or GBTI.
Further, rather than depending on other persons, women now have the opportunity to stand on their own feet. Single parents now have a chance to help themselves and derive benefits which will last a lifetime.
She added that once single parents are willing to seize the opportunity presented, they can elevate themselves and gain confidence in themselves.
Also speaking at the function were regional Chairman, Zulfikar Mustapha, GBTI Corriverton Branch Manager Naresh Balkarran, and Razika Majid, Chairperson of the Women’s Affairs Committee of Berbice.
