Canadian High Commissioner pays courtesy call at GECOM
Canadian High Commissioner, Francis Montour, paid a visit to the head of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) Dr. Steve Surujbally on Thursday.
According to a release by GECOM, Mr. Montour was given a detailed account of some of the major activities of the Commission as well as of some of the preparations for the impending 2011 elections.

He was told about the new National Register of Registrants and some of the work that had gone into the preparations for staging the Local Government Elections in April of this year. The groundwork that has gone into the proposed re-commencement of Continuous Registration in September of this year was also one of the topics that came up for discussion.
According to the release, Dr. Surujbally assured Mr. Montour that GECOM will always adhere to international best practices as it carries out its mandate.
Mr. Montour took the opportunity to assure Dr. Surujbally of the continued assistance of the people and Government of Canada in every possible way with reference to the preparations for and the administering of elections of Guyana.
He stated that the Canadian Government has recognised and acknowledged GECOM’s work in the staging of a ‘peaceful and efficient’ general election in 2006.
