Dear Editor,
Reference is made to David Williams’ letter “An elected leader is replaceable and could be removed from office by legitimate means” (KN 17/7/2010) Comparing the issue of being held accountable by the people for Mr. Robert Corbin, Leader of the PNCR, and Mr. Bharrat Jagdeo, President of Guyana and Head of State, is like comparing orange to apple. Mr. Corbin is elected by the members of the PNCR and in his capacity as Leader of the PNCR is answerable to the membership.
The PNCR rules are very clear on electing and removing their leaders and party members obey these rules.
As to Mr. Corbin holding the position as Leader of the Opposition, his election to that position and his responsibilities are outlined in the Guyana Constitution.
It should be made clear that as Leader of the PNCR, Mr. Corbin is answerable to the membership. As Leader of the Opposition he is answerable to the nation and his roles should not be confused. If the writer is unaware of the achievements of the leader of the Opposition then he can blame no one other than himself for his failure to keep in touch and really understand Guyana’s politics. My time will not be wasted briefing him on what he truly has no interest in.
Mr. Jagdeo was elected by the people of Guyana and holds a position that is paid for by the people’s tax dollars, including those who voted PNC, PPP, GAP/ROAR, AFC and others.
He is held accountable by all and any one can ask him to resign.
I call on David Williams as he shamelessly supports the lawless advocacy of those who believe that they have the right to Leadership and as he argues for the “ underperforming, controversial Leader to resign” that he also applies the same reasoning to others who desire leadership. What is good for one is good for all. Can Corbin’s detectors withstand the scrutiny that they apply for him?
