– killer still at large six months on
By Michael Jordan
It has been over six months since someone dumped Luciana Bhagwandin’s mutilated body at Harlem, West Coast Demerara, but the Trainee Teacher’s parents are still hoping that police will track down the sadist who killed their only daughter.
They are sending out an appeal to anyone who may know the identity of the individual who is believed to be the prime suspect in the unsolved case.
On January 10, 2010, residents of the rice-farming community of Harlem, West Coast Demerara found the corpse of the pretty, 22-year-old lying on a parapet.
She had been stabbed 16 times.
Police and relatives believe that she was murdered by a dark-complexioned man of Indian ancestry who called himself ‘Jerry Jhagroop’.
According to the victim’s close friends, ‘Jerry’ claimed to be employed at an embassy. He also claimed to be a senior security official with the state.
According to reports, the suspect had met Luciana in late 2009, when the young woman and her husband had resided at Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara.
Relatives blame him for causing the couple to separate. The young Trainee Teacher began to stay at a female relative’s home at Industry, East Coast Demerara, while still attending college.
Although they never met the suspect, Luciana’s mother, Linda Narine, told Kaieteur News that ‘Jerry’ spoke to them by cell phone on December 29, 2009 and on January 2, 2010.
“He said that he didn’t want her to go back to college, he wanted her to work with him.” According to her, ‘Jerry’ had a Canadian accent.
Mrs. Narine’s view is that ‘Jerry’ feared that Luciana would return to her husband. Luciana’s friends would later tell Kaieteur News that she had confided that ‘Jerry’ repeatedly threatened to kill her if she returned to her husband. He had also allegedly placed a gun to her head once.
Luciana’s associates also said that the man would sometimes pick up the trainee teacher in a dark-blue car with heavily tinted windows
Luciana reportedly visited her parents in December and Mrs. Narine said that she pleaded with her daughter to end the relationship with ‘Jerry’.
“I told her to go back to college (and) that we would support her.” She stayed with her parents until January 2, 2010, before returning to the home of her female relative.
On January 8, 2010, Luciana left the relative’s home after saying that she was going to a supermarket.
She was never seen alive again.
But according to some of Luciana’s friends, she was reportedly in the vicinity of Ogle, when the occupants of a dark-coloured vehicle abducted her.
Her body was found two days later at Harlem.
Police have since appealed to the public for information on the suspect, but no leads appear to be forthcoming.
Luciana’s mother said that they have even spoken to Minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee to ensure that her daughter’s unsolved murder does not remain unsolved.
“This is really sad and really hard (on us),’ Mrs. Narine said yesterday.
“If these people (the killer(s)) know what they did to us. She didn’t deserve this.
“Every single day we are trying to find a clue.”
