Already having to travel in batches due to the high rate of travel during this peak season, LIAT Airlines has made it even more challenging for the National Under-17 Footballers to get to Dominica to participate in Group C of the Caribbean Football Union World Cup Qualifying competition.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport yesterday, Manager Carlos Bernard said the first batch of 14 was scheduled to depart Guyana yesterday at 11:00hrs for Dominica since their first game is set for tomorrow against the Netherlands Antilles.
Bernard said they arrived at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri around 08:30hrs yesterday whet through the normal checking in process, cleared immigration and were in the departure lounge when they were told by a LIAT staff that the flight was cancelled due to some maintenance problems.
Bernard said they have not been given any definite information as to when they will depart. The second set of players and officials are booked to fly out today at 11:00hrs but there is no guarantee that they will be able to leave Guyana.
The July, August, and September period is always a peak period for LIAT and the Management must be aware that they have to be prepared and have their planes in tip top shape for the anticipated influx of passengers, an official of the GFF stated.
The officials said this is very unacceptable since it puts more pressure on the GFF to have the players accommodated and fed for an additional period which was not catered for.
Manager Bernard said the players are very anxious and have been asking repeatedly what the position was in terms of confirmation when they will be travelling.
“These guys have been training hard under the guidance of the Technical staff and are looking forward to doing Guyana proud. We have to hope for the best and hope that this situation can be sorted out by LIAT. It puts more pressure on the guys to get in to Dominica and settle down for the business at hand, that of winning the group.”
The Junior Jaguars are scheduled to face host team Dominica on Thursday with their final game against Aruba on Saturday.
The winner of the group will advance to stage two (Group F) to be hosted by Jamaica and will also include Haiti and the winner of Group D which features host Barbados, Grenada, St. Vincent & the Grenadines and Suriname.
The Management staff headed by Bernard also include Head Coach Sampson Gilbert, Assistant Coach Herbert McPherson, Physio/Trainer Lindley Langhorne and GFF Technical Development Officer Lyndon France.
