West Demerara residents get ‘special treatment’ from Cuban Medical Brigade

The residents of West Demerara enjoyed some ‘special treatment’ yesterday as seven members of the Cuban Medical Brigade offered their services in Vreed-en-Hoop.
The doctors who are from the Best Hospital and the Georgetown Public Hospital took their places outside the Payless Variety Store where they were offering free medical consultations and referrals to persons in the area.
Slated to see patients for some three hours yesterday afternoon, when this newspaper spoke to the doctors about halfway into the exercise they said that they had already attended to some 80 persons.
The doctors were a diverse group and had a specialist for almost every complaint.
They said that they were providing advice, brief physical examinations where possible, and making appointments for consultations for those who came to see them and were in need of further attention.
They also took the opportunity to dispense treatments where necessary and possible, and advised persons as to which doctors and centres they needed to refer to for the treatment of specific ailments that they could not address themselves.
Among the doctors present persons could have seen a specialist in pediatrics, gynecology, psychiatry, dermatology or internal medicine.
Also present were a surgeon and a general practitioner. They noted that a large number of the cases that they saw today were for the dermatologist.
Head of the group, Dr. Jose Luis Rodriguez, who is incidentally the dermatologist, said that he was approached by the owner of the Payless Variety Store, Joseph Ramkumar, to run a clinic of sorts for the people of the West Demerara area and the Cuban Medical Brigade readily agreed. Dr. Rodriguez said that this was not the first outreach activity of this sort that they were undertaking.
The doctors have already taken their efforts to Wakenaam, Leguan and the Laluni Community.
They said that they were trying to visit areas where there exists the need for medical services among residents but persons might not be able to access same for any number of reasons such as lack of funds or distance.
