The children at the Ptolemy Reid Rehabilitation Centre will see their much deserved playtime activities at the centre improved by a set of new recreational equipment.
Eon Caesar, Director of the Rotary Club of Demerara, officially handed over the new equipment to the Rehabilitation Advisor of the facility, Cynthia Massay on Friday last. The donation marks the first community service project undertaken by the club in their new year – the rotary year begins on July 1.
According to Ceasar, they contacted the Centre to see what some of the needs might be and the deteriorating play set was one of the areas that needed attention. Undertaking that project, the club sought quotations and realised that instead of refurbishing the play set it would be better to just build a new one. So with the assistance of Fibre Tech, the new play set was commissioned and built for the sum of $185,000.
Mrs. Cynthia Massay accepted the donation on behalf of the Centre. She said that the Centre tries to ensure that the children there can enjoy the same type of activities that all children in Guyana should have, including recreation.
She said that sports and playing are very important in a child’s life, even more so for a disabled child and the state of the equipment here was making it hard for them to provide these activities for the children. She expressed her gratitude on behalf of the Center and said she looks forward to a long relationship with the club.
Caesar also said that the club will be looking into helping the Centre meet a number of their educational needs by donating books and materials for the students later in the year, especially when the school year restarts.
