US$15.4M Amaila Falls Road Project…
Minister of Transport and Hydraulics, Robeson Benn, says that his Ministry will not be releasing any information related to the contract and its progress that was awarded to Makeshwar ‘Fip’ Motilall to build the approach road to Amaila Falls.
When contacted yesterday to ascertain if Motilall has submitted the remaining designs and if any of them have been approved by the Government the Minister said that he was adamant that no information will be disclosed.
He said that when the road building equipment arrive that is when there will be a statement.
The equipment are expected to arrive on Wednesday.
No other official in a position to shed some light on the matter would comment. Benn maintained his position as was the case during a recent press briefing that no information should be disclosed at this time.
But when pressed at that time for information on the details of the delay in the schedule, Senior Engineer and Ministerial Advisor, Walter Willis, did say that the first 35 pieces of heavy duty equipment required to be used in the construction of the road were en route.
They should arrive in Guyana by Wednesday and represent the first batch.
It was also pointed out that some of the preliminary designs for the hydro project road have been provided.
The Amaila Falls road project, awarded to Synergy Holdings, has to start “now” to ensure financial closure is met by the end of the year for the substantive hydropower project, President Bharrat Jagdeo had said to reporters during the recently concluded CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting in Jamaica.
Synergy Holdings, whose President is Motilall, has been awarded the US$15.4M project to build roads and bridges necessary for the start-up of the Amaila Falls Hydro project, but the award of the contract has come under question and work is yet to start three months after the award of the contract.
There has even been court action challenging the award of the contract. The project includes some 110km of virgin road through the forest as well as 85km of road where trails already exist.
