Steven Jacobs hit an unbeaten half-century and shared in an unfinished 107-run 3rd wicket partnership with Assad Fudadin who made 47 not out, but they were on the losing side yesterday at the Guyana National Stadium.
In their first practice match in preparation for the Caribbean 20/20 competition which starts in Barbados on Thursday, the Guyana team beat a Digicel X1 by 19 runs even as Jacobs and Fudadin, both members of the National squad which will face the Windwards in their first match, played for the Digicel side.
In sweltering heat and on a slow track, the National team scored 62 runs in the last five overs to reach 171-7 off 20 overs before restricting the Digicel unit to 152-2 when their 20 overs expired.
Travis Dowlin (17) and Sewnarine Chattergoon (8) were both drooped off Trevon Garraway in his first two overs before Paul Wintz, one of two new faces in the Guyana squad, removed them both to leave the score on 27-2 in 4 overs.
West Indies players Ramnaresh Sarwan and Narsingh Deonarine revived the position with attractive batting and took the score to 89 before Deonarine skied Jacobs to point. Deonarine’s run-a-ball 25 included 2 fours.
Three runs later, Jacobs, who had an excellent game, ran out Sarwan with a direct hit to the non-striker’s end from short third man after the Captain had hit 3 fours and a six in his 26-ball 36.
Deon Ferrier removed Chris Barnwell (25 from 18 balls), Royston Crandon (6) and Derwin Christian (7) as the National team slipped to 141-7 in 18.1 overs.
USA International Lennox Cush, the oldest and most experienced 20/20 player in the side joined forces with Jonathon Foo, the youngest and least experienced, to add 30 in 12 balls with Cush hitting 3 fours and a six in his undefeated 20 from just 7 balls. Foo’s unbeaten 20 came from 10 balls and included 2 fours and a six.
Ferrier captured 3-27 and Wintz 2-37 while Jacobs was the most economical of the bowlers with 0-21 from 4 overs of controlled off-spin.
Former West Indies opener Richard Ramdeen (18) and Trevon Griffith (21) who toured New Zealand with the West Indies for this year’s under-19 World Cup, fell in the space of 2 runs to leave the Leon Johnson led Digicel side on 47-2.
Griffith was bowled by leg-spinner Davendra Bishoo and Ramdeen was caught behind off Deonarine before Jacobs, who faced 36 balls and struck 3 fours and a six in his 51 and Fudadin whose 47 came from 39 balls and was decorated with 3 fours and a six, remained to the end with Jacobs hitting Royston Crandon for a six off the last ball of the match to reach his fifty.
The team will play their final practice match from 10:00hrs today at the Stadium against the Digicel team before departing Guyana on Wednesday.
