Minister of Health, Dr Leslie Ramsammy says that the recent comment by Minister of Local Government, Kellawan Lall, as it relates to the health crisis in the city has been misinterpreted.
He joined his colleagues, some of whom, including Dr Roger Luncheon and Works Minister Robeson Benn, who said that Minister Lall was joking.
Yesterday the Health Minister said that he spoke with Minister Lall who explained to him that he was just trying to say that if it were to happen then it would be the fault of the City Council.
When asked if given the potential health risk the government will intervene, he said that the Health Ministry is closely monitoring the situation and will make a determination soon.
He said that the Ministry will be issuing advisories soon positing that given the amount of garbage that is strewn across the city it is already a crisis.
The Local Government Minister said recently that he would be glad if there is a health crisis in the city.
“Well, if there is a health crisis in the city, I would be glad, because it would remove the City Council. They’ll be responsible for it,” Lall told reporters when questioned about a potential health crisis in the city over garbage that has been piling up for the past three weeks.
Individuals are currently traversing the streets in various types of vehicles and horse carts collecting as much as $500 from a household to collecting garbage.
There are dumps of garbage piled in the city and accumulating at homes and critical points such as markets. M&CC vehicles can be observed around the city attempting to tackle the situation but the garbage is proving to be a challenge.
