Former West Indies under-15 leg-spinner Amir Khan followed up his 8-70 with a fighting unbeaten 41 but Guyana ended the 2nd day of their 3rd round TCL regional under-19, 3-day cricket match in great danger of being beaten by the Windward Islands on the final day today.
Set 88 to win after Guyana fell for 226 in their second innings, the Windwards ended the penultimate day on 39-2, still 47 runs away from their first victory against Guyana at this level since 2005 in St Vincent and the Guyanese will hope that rain, which is forecast for today and some mesmerizing bowling from Khan can deny the Islanders victory.
Resuming on 179-5 when play began 44 minutes late on the second day, replying to Guyana’s paltry 51 all out, the Windwards crashed to 190 all out as Khan took four of the last five wickets yesterday to ensure the Islanders lost 5 wickets for 11 runs in 11 minutes as the Guyanese fought back.
The 17-year-old Khan, who hails from Enmore but plays division one cricket for City side Everest, befuddled the batsmen to take his wicket tally to 21 and limit the Windward Islands lead to 139.
Khan took 11 wickets including a 7-wicket 2nd innings haul on debut in the first round against the Leewards and 2-111 against defending champions Jamaica in the 2nd round.
The spinner, who took the most wickets in the GTM under-19 Inter County competition in Guyana which was used to help select the Guyana team for this competition, fell one wicket short of bettering the Guyana record of 9-116 by off-spinner Ervin Mangru in the 1999 tournament in Barbados.
By Lunch Guyana reached 79-3 from 14 overs with Harrinarine Chattergoon (30) and Ricardo Adams (38) failing to build on good starts.
By Tea the South Americans were 206-9 with Kwame Crosse, who made back-to-back unbeaten half-centuries in the first two matches, falling for 10. Dominique Rikhi also failed to convert his 29 into a substantial innings while West Indies under-19 Keon Joseph supported Khan with 26 as the lower order saved the Guyanese more blushes.
Khan, enjoying a good all-round game, was left stranded 9 short of a maiden fifty as Levaughn Lewis took 5-77 for the Islanders who last won the title in 2001.
