After a highly successful sojourn at the recently concluded annual Hampton International Games, staged in Trinidad and Tobago, aspiring athletic star Malcolm Walcott has clinched a hefty sponsorship package aimed at supporting his athletic ambitions.
While at the Trinidad meet, Walcott procured a gold medal in the Boys U17, 800m in a time of 2:04:19secs and returned later in the day to replicate that feat in the boys U17, 1500m in 4:20:9secs. Both times represent a personal best for the athlete who resides in the Betterverwagting ECD village.
Yesterday afternoon the General Manager of Mohamed Rahim and Sons of the Betterverwagting community, Shahan Mohamed, demonstrated sound corporate citizenry when he acquiesced to a further sponsorship package for the young athlete. The Beterverwagting based businessman has committed to a further package deal that includes a monthly ceiling of approximately $20,000 dollars which includes supplements, transportation for athletics related activities and nutritional meals among others.
Moments after unveiling the particulars of the sponsorship package, Mr. Mohamed explained that the deal covers an initial period of three months when Walcott is expected to participate in the South American Youth Championships scheduled for October in Chile. Based on his performance at these games, Walcott stands to procure a further lucrative package.
Meanwhile, coach of the Enmore Athletics Club, John Martins disclosed that the executives of his club have voted to commence a high level training programme for Walcott to enhance his chances at the Chile Youth Championships. Further, the club executives have also targeted next year’s Junior Carifta Championships. However, the young athlete must reduce his personal best timings in the 800m dash from 2:01secs to at least 1:55secs if he is to be selected.
Martins explained that Walcott’s training regiment would include a detoxification process to rid the body of the toxic wastes. Subsequently, the young athlete would be introduced to a fibrous, energy enhanced diet to replace the tissues and facilitate renewed energy. “This is a very costly process and we are extremely grateful for Mr. Mohamed’s financial input,” said Mr. Martins. He is confident that after Walcott returns from the South American Youth Championships, his benefactor would willingly continue with the package deal. “We have a young athlete that is improving at a tremendous rate and this kind of support would only serve to buoy his spirits,” prophesied Martins.
