The Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA) will be meeting with residents of the mining community of Mahdia, tomorrow, to discuss with them the use and distribution of the Mahdia relief fund.
The meeting with the Executive members of the association, the Mahdia Mining Committee and residents will take place at Ram’s Shop (Desert Storm) at 11:00 hrs.
The executive members of the association will discuss how the monies raised through the relief fund can be used to meet their needs.
The GGDMA established the Mahdia relief fund after fire destroyed a significant part of the mining community. The association has pledged to assist in the rebuilding and restoration of the area.
President of the GGDMA, Fred Mc Wilfred, noted that the efforts of the association will be conducted in collaboration with the residents, local and regional agencies and in keeping with national relief efforts.
He said that the association has committed to buying a fire tender for the area; this will ensure that Mahdia is equipped to deal with the possibility of any similar disaster.
More than $500,000 raised has already been distributed to the affected families via the Mahdia Mining Committee and a stockpile of timber donated by the association has also been mobilised.
The GGDMA on July 1, established the Mahdia Relief Fund with the specific purpose to assist miners and members of the mining community of Mahdia. To date the fund has raised over $10 million. There have been commitments from several other companies.
The fund has been set up at the Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association and persons who wish to contribute can contact the GGDMA at lot 29 North Road Bourda or on Telephone Numbers 225-2217 or fax 225-1828.
The Mining community of Mahdia was devastated by fire on July 1. The conflagration ravaged several businesses and the homes of several residents. As many as 150 persons have been left homeless and the damage in property is still being accessed.
Mahdia is the central hub for the mining activities in Region Eight and many of the businesses affected provided vital support for miners.
