Government, on Friday, distributed more than 300 food packages and bottled water to residents who were directly affected by flood owing to spring tide coupled with heavy rainfall in various communities in Region Ten including Three Friends, Malali, Muritaro and Rockstone to provide short term support.
Minister of Public Works, Robeson Benn, who led the team to the region, disclosed that the distribution of the food packages comprising rice, flour, oil and peas among other items, is as a result of a collaborative effort by government through the Civil Defence Commission and Food for the Poor.
As assessment was carried out in the area on Wednesday and a decision was made to immediately bring supplies to the stricken residents.
According to the Minister, in a government statement, agencies have commenced distributing medical supplies including tablets to purify water. Also involved in the distribution of the packages Friday were Region Ten Chairman, Mortimer Mingo, and Chief Executive Officer of LINMINE Secretariat, Horace James, among other officials.
Kwakwani has not been excluded from the relief effort although residents have benefited from food supplies a few weeks ago. Food packages for Kwakwani were expected to be sent down yesterday, the release said.
According to Mingo, while the communities have been flooded before, this time was severe.
He noted that the situation is not unique to Guyana and urged for understanding of the effects of climate change.
Many of the residents of the area are involved in small scale farming and have lost their crops due to the flooding.
