National side face Digicel Challenge X1at Providence today
By Sean Devers
Team Guyana continues its journey to South Africa for the Club Champions League Twenty20 competition in September with their first match since the 14-man squad to participate in the Caribbean Twenty20 tournament was announced this week.
The Ramnaresh Sarwan led team, which include West Indies players Travis Dowlin, Narsingh Deonarine and Sewnarine Chattergoon, will oppose a Digicel Summer Splash X1 today from 13:00hrs at the Guyana National Stadium at Providence in a Twenty20 affair.
The Guyana team was selected based on performances in the recent Digicel National Summer Splash competition which was won by Berbice who beat Georgetown in the final.
Guyana’s record in this format of the game at the regional level of six wins from 7 matches including their semi-final loss to Jamaica in 2008 is only bettered by defending Regional champions Trinidad and Tobago who has won 7 of their eight games at this level.
Guyana, who beat T&T in the inaugural regional final in Antigua in 2006, began their encampment at the Chetram Singh Centre of Excellence at LBI and have had to resort to indoor practice sessions and training due to the adverse weather in Guyana.
The Digicel side was selected from the outstanding performers from the competition who failed to gain selection on the National side which face-off with the Windward Islands in their opening match of the Caribbean competition in Barbados on July 23.
Richard Ramdeen and Deon Ferrier, among the players who could be considered unlucky to be left out of the Guyana side to contest the regional tournament in Barbados and Trinidad, are in the Leon Johnson Captained Digicel line-up which also include West Indies Under-19 Trevon Griffith, former West Indies under-19 player Gajanand Singh and Krishnadat Ramoo, who was the outstanding off-spinner in the Digicel Summer Splash tournament.
The Guyana team departs for Barbados on July 21 and play CCC and Barbados in their other two preliminary round matches. The winner of the Caribbean series will qualify for the Champions League in South Africa and if Canada wins then the losing semi-finalist will represent the West Indies in South Africa. Trinidad and Tobago reached the final of the last Champions League competition in India.
