… Corbin does not expect calls for him to re-consider
The person selected to be the Presidential Candidate of the main opposition People’s National Congress Reform, must have the full confidence of the membership of the PNCR, be of sound and unquestionable integrity, possess the skill, expertise and networking capability as well as command respect and support of Guyanese generally.
The decision by the PNCR General Council also states that this person should be identified as early as possible, by a transparent system that includes wide consultation with bona-fide Party members, groups and supporters.
The party’s General Secretary, Oscar Clarke, yesterday told reporters that the Central Executive Committee (CEC) should identify an inclusive group by August 31 to conduct the consultation. The Group will make recommendations to be approved by the CEC and General Council on the system, criteria and procedures to be employed for the identification of the candidate.
The Motion that was unanimously passed, outlining the methodology to be used in the identification of the Party’s Presidential candidate has been approved by the party’s General Council.
Leader of the Opposition, Robert Corbin, stated that the party had never sanctioned any work regarding the search for a Candidate prior to the General Council meeting.
He added that any work that may have been perceived as such, would have been personal, “or persons who were perhaps promoting themselves to the post.”
Corbin stated that the Party had made it clear at a General Council meeting that they were going to have a presidential candidate for 2011, and now they know what the process is by which a selection will be made. By the next meeting in three months time, it will be clear what the Party is doing in that regard.
It is known however, that ex-members of the party, and some factions within, will want to put forward names for consideration by the group, but will they be allowed to? Corbin did not appear to be worried by this question and advised that whatever the group recommends would have to meet with the approval of the CEC and the General Council to which the report will be presented.
He also reiterated that the group that will be engaging in the consultation will be an inclusive one, and every one will have an opportunity, including the highest body of the party in absence of the Congress, to pronounce on whatever is determined.
Then there is the possibility that the process can still be viewed as being biased towards people who may favour particular candidates. Corbin feels that these fears are baseless and that this is not possible. He added that the criteria and the mechanism will be approved by the General Council.
Another possibility that Corbin will not consider, is that there could be an overwhelming call for him to reconsider his decision not to be the party’s candidate. He said that he does not expect this issue to arise.
He further stated that he did not want to allow himself or the party members to be clouded in their objective consideration of the matter. He called for party supporters to concentrate on the decision of the General Council which will be addressed by the CEC.
The PNCR General Council is the highest forum of the Party outside the Biennial Congress and it meets every three months.
