Adonis satisfied with first week
Only 20 participants turned up last Monday at the launching of the 9th annual East Coast Cricket Board (ECCB) Cricket Academy at the Chetram Singh Centre of Excellence at LBI.
But Academy Coordinator former Guyana fast bowler Robert ‘Pacer’ Adonis told Kaieteur Sport that participation had increased to 52 at the end of the first week of activities.
Adonis said that 10 females are now a part of the Academy, 9 more than were present last Monday when Director of Sports Neil Kumar said he was pleased with the racial mix present but disappointed with the gender balance. The students, aged between 9-15 years had the opportunity of watching the National Twenty20 cricket team practice and Adonis informed that the children were very excited to practice at Guyana’s only indoor facility.
“I was very pleased to see kids from Brickdam Secondary, Queens College, North Georgetown and Richard Ishmael at the Academy.
These children go to school in the City but live on the East Coast and the level of interest among the participants is extremely high,” Adonis said.
Topics discussed during the first week were the History of Cricket, Laws of Cricket, Discipline, Leadership and Administration, Road Safety and Cricket Scoring.
It was explained that the planned discussions on Food and Nutrition and the Importance of Education will be done next week since the facilities were unavailable for the first week.
Two Coaches were used since Demerara Head Coach and former National youth Player Orin Bailey was unavailable due to his commitments with the Guyana Twenty20 team which leaves for Barbados on Wednesday.
He will join the Academy this week.
“I am satisfied with the first week, they seem very interested and lots of questions were asked. (Sewnarine) Chattergoon spoke to them for half hour on Thursday and Deonarine will spend some time with them on Monday. Manager of the Guyana team Carl Moore has been very accommodating and we (Academy participants) have made a special effort not to disturb the guys during their sessions.
Adonis opined that since they are so many single parents on the East Coast of Demerara, the cost of attending the Academy every day might have negatively impacted on attendance but added that just over 50 students is the right number to deal with and informed that registration is now closed.
