New garbage dump a source of discomfort

The garbage dump, which was relocated just under a year ago from Anna Regina to Lima on the Essequibo Coast, remains a bother to residents who live in close proximity.
They complain that there are flies, the stench and smoke emanating from the site.
These have been increasing daily, much to the annoyance of all who live nearby. Dogs can be seen feeding on dead animals from the garbage heap.
According to residents, a discussion was held between the Anna Regina Town Council and several members of Lima Housing Scheme, alerting them of the relocation of the new site.
The residents were assured by the officials that the site will be used to dump only kitchen and market refuse, but it is at present being utilised for the dumping of dead animals, scrap metal and sewage also.
The situation, they say, is causing them to fear for their health. It has become a sore issue for them to handle.
Mr. Lall, a livestock farmer, said that because of the grave situation he has been forced to discontinue his trade and sold his animals because of the stray dogs and his animals being infected with different diseases as a result of the dump site.
On Wednesday, it was observed that the previous pits are still not covered and the newly dug pit appears to be less than 100 rods (1,200ft) away from the public road.
This was promised to them by the Anna Regina Town Clerk, Mr. Ganga Persaud.
