Double wicket cricket, an exciting format of the sport, comes alive in the Essequibo Islands when the Guyana Softball League in collaboration with RMG Promotions hosts a competition starting tomorrow at Maria’s Pleasure Ground in Wakenaam from 08:30hrs. In total, 55 pairs will take to the field, battling for cash incentives and trophies.
The action then moves over to Leguan on Sunday July 25 next when some 30 pairs will compete for honours. Thereafter, the organisers move over to Hogg Island for that leg of the competition before moving to Bartica.
Thirty nine pairs are already registered for the Hogg Island leg of the tournament while the Barticians are eagerly awaiting the commencement of their leg. There has been a phenomenal rise in softball cricket activities in the Bartica Region, underlined by the recent inauguration of the Essequibo Islands Ten10 competition.
Already some 40 pairs are registered and gearing up to challenge for the honors of cash incentives and trophies. The champions of each zone (four in total) will battle to become the overall double wicket Champions of the Essequibo Islands.
The organisers are excited about the prospects of the tournament as a unifying force following successful efforts in Linden where Rangers Sports Club took away the lion’s share of the prizes at stake in that leg of the tournament.
The competition had also realized its objective of forging new relationships as most of the residents were excited with the prospect of seeing such a competition spreading to all the Regions.
