Food for the Poor (FFTP) during last year, spent $22 Billion distributing pharmaceutical to Government hospitals and clinics, to the Ministry of Health, and to outreach programmes, according to Executive Director Leon L. Davis.
He disclosed in Region Two, 135 houses were built for the less fortunate. Also built were Community Centres, Trade Stores, schools together with furnishing, and sanitation blocks.
Adding that to a long list of works that Food for the Poor invested in; Davis said that 20 containers of reading materials were also given out to libraries, some of which were set up by the organisation and the Ministry of Education.
Agricultural tools were given out to small farmers; and two villages were supplied with water — Onderneeming Sandpit on the Essequibo Coast and Lake Mainstay housing Scheme where standpipes were erected.
Many chicken farms were also built to help assist communities to empower themselves, one recently done at Kuru Kuru College. There were sewing classes, and feeding programmes in schools and eight orphanages which consist of 249 children. Food for the Poor worked with these throughout the year.
An orphanage is being refurbished at Kuru-Kururu where there will be separate accommodation for boys and girls.
They are provided also with clothing, educational items and birthday gifts and a large party once a year that will be held on the 28 July 2010 at the Gymnasium on Mandela Avenue.
Cricket gear, footballs, basketballs and volleyballs, were donated for recreational purposes for the poor environments; wheelchairs are brought in to give to persons on recommendation by a doctor free of charge.
Kwakwani and Mahdia received much needed food supplies, and supplies are being sent to the Upper Demerara River which is affected by flood.
“Food for the Poor might not be able to service all the needs of the poorest of the poor but every effort we exhaust. We have a programme that directly deals with 170 shut-ins in Linden.”
Davis said that an organised effort is being made to have pensioners receive hampers when they are collecting their pensions.
He gave thanks to the Ministry of Finance, GRA, John Fernandes, C&V shipping and other shipping companies that assist in making sure that we are able to service the poorest of the poor, we would like to thank our donors and all the supporters who support our many fund raising activities… especially the media.”
There are 21 Food for the Poor committees throughout the country responsible for distribution of goods and services.
