An autopsy report on the death of Assistant Superintendent Ivelaw Murray states that he died from “unnatural causes”, leaving open the question of whether his demise was a suicide or murder.
The report has reportedly been released to the police, and a senior official said that the police are sticking to their view that Murray took his own life after killing Constable Kevin Shepherd.
In his report, seen by Kaieteur News, Dr. Vivekanand Brijmohan, stated that he examined Murray’s body at the Skeldon Public Hospital mortuary.
He observed caked blood on Murray’s head, ear, face and central chest and to the right mid-forearm. There was also a black and blue swelling to the upper right eyelid.
The pathologist stated that there was a 2.5cm lacerated gunshot wound below the victim’s chin. The margins of the wound were ragged and blackened.
Dr. Brijmohan stated that the wound track passed directly upwards, fractured the upper jaw and lower jaws, with splintering of the nasal sinuses. The root of the nose-bridge and bones in the skull, were also fractured. The exit wound was between the eyebrows.
Dr. Brijmohan’s report stated that there was also a 0.6 circular gunshot wound with blackened borders to the right scalp, 3.2 cm directly above the upper border of the right ear.
The wound track (path the bullet took) passed directly across the brain substance with laceration and bleeding and exited by a 3.0cm x 2.0 cm opening to the left parietal bone 3.5 cm directly above the upper surface of the left ear.
The bone to the left temple showed three linear fractures.
Dr. Brijmohan added that cause of death was shock and hemorrhage with laceration of the brain due to gunshot injuries. Death was due to “unnatural causes.”
Some medical experts have suggested that Murray would have been suffocating on his own blood after shooting himself under the chin and damaging his mouth, tongue and sinuses. Those who hold this view state that the injury would have rendered him incapable of shooting himself in the temple.
However, other medical sources suggested that the wound was not severe enough to prevent him from firing the second shot to the temple.
Police are yet to ascertain whether there was gunshot residue on ASP Murray’s hands or if a bullet fragment that was recovered from Constable Shepherd’s body came from ASP Murray’s service revolver.
Murray’s parents have solicited Attorney-at-Law Glenn Hanoman to look into their interests. They say that all evidence suggest that he was murdered, and are preparing to move to the High Court to have him accorded a military funeral.
Hanoman, who has seen a copy of the autopsy report, told Kaieteur News that he had tried unsuccessfully to contact Commissioner Henry Green yesterday on the matter before proceeding further.
Police Commissioner Henry Greene had told reporters that the two policemen had an “inappropriate relationship”, a charge that is being refuted by Murray’s parents and some of his colleagues.
Kaieteur News understands that, acting on this information, Dr. Brijmohan had examined the bodies of both victims for evidence of a homosexual relationship. He reportedly found no such evidence.
Murray’s mother, Jenitta Daniels, had told Kaieteur news that police investigators had shown her a note that they said was found in her son’s home. She said that the note, written in script, and dated June 27, had the words” “Mommy I love you, I’m sorry”.
A smiling face and another with tears were drawn on the note. Mrs. Daniels said she is convinced that her son did not write the note.
Murray was to have been buried yesterday but his relatives said they are postponing his funeral while seeking to have him accorded military rites.
