Twenty20 fundraiser on today at Buxton Ground sponsored by Sports Ministry
By Sean Devers
The East Coast Demerara Village of Buxton celebrates its 170th Anniversary and President of the Buxton Carl Hooper Cricket Club Essie Peters said they are doing their bit to ensure that the Village continues to make a positive contribution to society.
Peters believes that talent abounds in the area and feels that sports is a great vehicle to get youths who might not have as much opportunities as others away from crime and the ills of society.
Former Guyana Under-19 cricketer Clive Andries is the Buxton Cricket Club first division Captain and is a wonderful example to his peers in the Village.
The youth took a break from cricket after helping Guyana to win their last Regional Under-19 cricket title in St Kitts in 2007 to further his education at UG before returning to sports better equipped to be a success in life.
The versatile Andries, whose father was killed in a road accident a few years ago, excelled in Football to the extent that he got into the Guyana team and now plays a big role for Buxton in both Football and Cricket.
The Academy is catering for 36 youths and the aim is to provide not only coaching on improving their cricket but life skills to make the youngsters better individuals.
The cost of running such an Academy is high and Peters is thankful to Lawyers Emily Dodson and Raphael Trotman for sponsorship to cover the cost of meals. The club is hoping that more companies and individuals will come forward to support the venture.
The club is also playing its part in raising funds for the Academy and today a Twenty20 cricket competition is scheduled at the Buxton ground.
The Ministry of Sports has sponsored the competition which starts at 09:00hrs and include teams representing Plaisance, Enterprise, LBI and host Buxton.
Peters says admission will not be more than $100 since they are depending on the bar to provide the bulk of the funds they hope to raise today. Meanwhile, the club has announced its first division squad for the upcoming Neil & Massey cricket competition.
The squad read:-Clive Andries (Captain), Marvin Cato (vice captain), Denis Andries, Marlon Thomas, Rawle Fredericks, Daren Peters, Osafo Durant, Ebron Kingston, Corwin Peters, Marvin Cole, Ryan Muesa, Kevin Abrams, Troy Abrams, Quason McLean, Oderi Reid, Daryl Fredericks, Tamanie Emanuel, Robin Singh, Compton Beharry
