President of GABA optimistic of many medals
Several weeks of intensive training concluded yesterday and the six boxers scheduled to represent Guyana at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Puerto Rico have departed for that country this morning, all exuding confidence of returning with prestigious accolades.
Those vying for honours at the games are middleweight, Devon Boatswain, flyweight, Dexter Jordon, junior/welterweight, Bert Braithwaite, lightweight, Clevon Rock, lightweight, Ray Sandiford and light/flyweight, Herlando Allicock.
Yesterday afternoon, the boxers were treated to lunch by the President and executives of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA).
Those executives present at the occasion are President, Steve Ninvalle, Vice Presidents Eustace Cuffy and Maurice Rajkumar, Secretary, Sean Richmond, Treasurer, Dexter Patterson and Assistant Secretary Treasurer, Keith Campbell. The coaches are Sebert Blake and Terrence Poole.
Junior Commonwealth Games Silver medalist, Clevon Rock has been delegated team leader while several of the other boxers have a small amount of international exposure.
They include Allicock with a record of 36 fights with 4 losses.
He was also one of Guyana’s representatives at the Junior Commonwealth Games but failed to enter the medal round. Allicock also traveled to Trinidad and Tobago where he procured a gold medal at the 2008 Caribbean Championships.
Ray Sandiford also possesses a wealth of experience and is expected to procure a prestigious medal. He won a gold medal at the 2006 Caribbean Games in Trinidad and Tobago and was also a member of the Pan Am Games qualifier two years later.
He lost against an Argentine but returned home to win the senior Open Championships last year. He was also adjudged best boxer of the tournament.
Braithwaite’s lone opportunity for international exposure occurred last year in a one night Goodwill tournament in Barbados.
However, an unfortunate incident where one of the Bajan boxers but did not box after one of the Bajan boxers fell out of the ring during combat and sustained an injury.
The Bajan boxing authorities then decided to halt the night’s proceedings.
The other two boxers, Jordon and Boatswain, are relatively new to the international arena but Jordon has a phenomenal record of 131 fights. He lost nine of them.
The two coaches are Sebert Blake and Terrence Poole. Both coaches disclosed that the boxers have all turned in a one hundred percent effort during training sessions.
Poole said that he and Blake had drilled the boxers on the technical as well as the physical aspects of the sport.
Both trainers are very experienced with Blake procuring valuable experience from a coaching seminar in Mexico.
A coach since 2001, Blake has worked with the national team for several outings including the 2004 Caribbean Games in Trinidad and Tobago and the 2007 World Championships in Chicago USA. He also worked with the national team for several assignments from 2004-2008.
A former amateur national champion, Poole has also had his fair share of successes at various games.
Ever since he undertook coaching duties at the Guyana Defense Force (GDF), boxers of that entity have performed credibly and after sharing the Novices championship honours with the Republican Boxing Gym, rebounded to cart off the honours at the Intermediate Boxing championships.
Meanwhile, Ninvalle expressed confidence in the team saying that they have been exposed to the best training regiment available locally.
“These boxers have been exposed to the best training programme in comparison to their predecessors and there should be no complaints in this area,” said Mr. Ninvalle.
He said that he was especially delighted by the cohesiveness among team members as well as the camaraderie displayed during the encampment period.
The GABA President said that he expects a lot from the boxers since the members of the selection committee would be guided by the performances at this tournament to select the team to participate in the Junior Commonwealth Games scheduled for October in India.
“We’ve taken them to the water, it is now up to them to drink the liquid,” professed Ninvalle.
