Dear Editor,
I respond to the letter, captioned, “Mr. Harry Gill may have missed some very important pointers” (07.15.10) by B. Beniprashad Rayman, whom I understand is an executive member of the PNCR.
Ms. Rayman asks that Mr. Corbin be respected as the Leader of the PNCR because he was elected by 600 members, but he/she refuses to do the same to the Head of State who was elected by over 50% of the voters at the last elections.
Is Rayman saying once you are elected voters must stop demanding that their Leaders deliver on their promises and if they don’t we should not call for them to resign.
It seems there are one set of rules and standards by which Mr. Corbin’s performance is judged and another for the President.
According to Rayman “Readers should remember Winston Murray said, “Yes, I am prepared to accept the results, because the margin is so wide, that even if there were – as I believe there were – flaws in the process and irregularities in the procedures, it is clear that Mr. Corbin would have won.” (SN 23/8/09).”
It seems Rayman has been regurgitating PPP/C propaganda so often that even he/she now believes it.
Mr. Corbin accepted defeat by the PPP/C after the last elections, yet every week he issues a statement outlining the atrocities committed by the PPP/C the elected Government. The same claim Rayman makes is made ever so often by the PPP/C about the PNCR’s reaction to its dictatorship.
It is clear that performance was not a guiding principle when members of the PNCR and Guyana elected their Leaders.
I think it would be more beneficial if Rayman could highlight the achievements of Mr. Corbin as Leader of the Party, if those were the reasons he was elected.
Let me remind you Rayman, Mr. Corbin is not just the Leader of the PNCR he is also Leader of the Opposition a job we the poor taxpayers of this country pay for. An elected Leader is replaceable and could be removed from office by legitimate means.
It is always the preferred choice that out of respect and the integrity of an office that good sense prevails and an underperforming, controversial Leader resigns.
