The Ministry of Agriculture has deployed technical staff and other resources to support the national response by agencies and local government bodies to communities in the Upper Demerara River whose river banks have been overflowing due to excessive rainfall and unusual level of high tide.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Minister Robert Persaud has deployed extension officers to affected areas to assess the situation and provide technical and other support to farmers in light of the current conditions.
Persaud has also directed the Guyana Forestry Commission and the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority to provide support to the various agencies responding to the affected hinterland and riverain communities.
In an effort to expedite relief to areas affected in Region Ten, Persaud has also mandated the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority to intensify its planned work programme in supporting the Region 10.
Already two excavators are working at Coomaka Village. In addition, one of the culverts along a main canal will be rehabilitated.
Engineers were deployed to the affected areas to undertake further assessments and to implement possible interventions, while the Authority’s Community Drainage and Irrigation Project workers assisted in the clearing of drains and waterways.
Water is receding quickly at low tides and presently, the Authority is considering the installation of self acting doors at main drainage outlets to alleviate the intrusion of river water.
Data from the Hydromet Service indicate that heavy downpours in the last 36 hours have increased the risk of flash flooding in inland and interior locations.
Charity in Region Two and Wales and Boerasirie in Region Three have exceeded their long term averages for July.
