Following the conflagration just over two months ago at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, which destroyed one of the main buildings in the compound, causing millions in losses, settlement has been agreed between the entity’s insurance broker and three insurance companies with cheques handed over yesterday.
This latest development will no doubt assist the hospital in speeding up its rebuilding process.
According to a statement from the P & P Insurance Brokers & Consultants Limited, the three insurance companies which provided coverage were United Insurance Company, Guyana & Trinidad Mutual Fire Insurance Company and North American Fire & General Insurance Company Limited
Chief Executive Officer of the hospital, Helen Browman, during a simple ceremony yesterday, thanked the three insurance companies for their positive response to the claim and their timely settlement. She also expressed delight with the work done by the insurance broker in preparing the claim and negotiating the settlement.
On May 10, an early morning fire destroyed the oldest wing of St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Kingston, Georgetown, erasing about 80 years of history.
While the destruction of the original hospital building was significant, all patients were safely evacuated as well as all medical staffers.
Some 32 patients, including four newborns, had to be rushed to safety. When the blaze was extinguished the institution’s oldest and most historic building that housed several doctors’ offices, the emergency room as well as the Triage area and the outpatient department was destroyed.
