Commissioner of Police and Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) Presidential Candidate, Henry Greene hands over one of the tickets to national senior male player, Christopher Franklin while Natalie Cummings looks on at centre.
– CAC TT team participation now possible

Commissioner of Police, Henry Greene’s benevolence toward table tennis continued yesterday at his office when he contributed airline tickets that made possible the participation of Guyana’s senior team at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games.
The Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) had added its name to a list of disciplines unable to procure the necessary funding to send its team to the upcoming Games. The CAC competition in table tennis is expected to run through July 22-30 in Puerto Rico.
General Secretary of the GTTA, Godfrey Munroe reportedly raised the concern and Greene, who will be contesting the Presidency of the association on July 31, stepped forward and offered what Munroe called a “significant contribution” to the association.
“We are basically covered in terms of the essentials now. The Police Commissioner’s significant contribution will now make this trip possible. He heard about our need and expressed an interest to help, which he came good on,” Munroe said when contacted.
The GTTA General Secretary said that he has noted the committed efforts of Greene to ensure, at all levels, the players’ training does not go in vain. He believed it would have been disappointing to have the national senior team training for so long and not compete.
The team includes, United States-based Michelle John and Paul David; Trenace Lowe, Natalie Cummings, Christopher Franklin and Idi Lewis. Munroe informed that the squad will travel with a team captain that has not yet been identified to Mayagüez, Puerto Rico.
“The tournament will be very competitive, but this eam has been in training for some time and it would have certainly been a disappointment if they didn’t get to go. So I want the Commissioner to know that his effort has indeed gone a long way,” Munroe added.
Efforts to reach the Commissioner yesterday proved futile. However, it was not the first occasion that Greene had placed his money where his mouth is. Eying the GTTA’s top office, Greene had made significant financial contributions on two other accounts.
The Police Commissioner surprised his rivals for the post when he dolled out $250,000 to six of the outstanding junior players from the National Sports Commission’s Independence tournament at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall last month.
Greene then followed that up when he hosted a high-profiled and lavish Veteran’s competition in which he also dolled out big bucks to the leading performers. The Commissioner had hosted a lot of popular public officials for the first time at the veterans’ contest.
