If Canada qualifies for the semi-final of the inaugural Caribbean 20/20 cricket competition in Trinidad on July 30, it will be a wonderful birthday gift for former Guyana under-19 player Hemnarine Chattergoon who turns 33 on that day.
The Right-handed Chattergoon, a prolific scorer for Albion in Guyana’s division one cricket, has the distinction of being the only Guyanese to score centuries in their first two innings at the Regional youth level when he got tons against Barbados on debut in the 1996 West Indies under-19 series and followed it up with another century against the Windward Islands in the next match.
Arguable the most competent batsman among the Chattergoon clan, Hemnarine, the eldest of the brothers migrated to Canada without ever playing for Guyana at the National senior level although many felt that he was very unfortunate not to make his first-Class debut in 1997 after himself, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Azeemul Haniff all scored youth Test centuries against Young Pakistan in Barbados.
Chattergoon’s only first class match was against the United Arab Emirates in Kings City three years ago. He made 10 in his only innings and is now the only Guyanese-born player in the Canadian team for the Regional 20/20 competition which starts in Brabdos on July 22.
Long serving Captain Sunil Dhaniram and pacer Eon Katchy are not in the squad which will be led by classy batsman Rizwan Cheema.
Canada face defending regional 20/20 champions Trinidad and Tobago in their opening match from 16:00hrs at the Kensington Oval and Chattergoon will have the opportunity of making his West Indies regional senior tournament in the same competition as his more famous brother Sewnarine Chattergoon who has played four Tests for the West Indies but none since December 2008.
The youngest of the Chattergoon brothers (Harrinarine) is a former Guyana under-15 Captain and is presently in St Lucia with the Guyana under-19 team while Ramnarine Chattergoon, a year younger than Sewnarine at 28, has played seven Regional One-Day matches for the Combined Colleges and Campuses.
There have been several instances where Guyanese brothers have played in regional cricket with the most recent being the Crandon siblings (Esuan and Royston) but never before have three Guyanese brothers played at the regional level for three different teams.
Canada will need to play really well to qualify for the semis since Jamaica, who lost to Trinidad and Tobago in the last Regional 20/20 competition in 2008, are also in their zone.
The Canada squad: Rizwan Cheema (capt), Harvir Baidwan, Trevin Bastiampillai, Geoff Barnett, Umar Bhatti, Hemnarine Chattergoon, Khurram Chohan, Parth Desai, Tyson Gordon, Calvert Hooper, Usman Limbada, Hiral Patel, Zubin Sukari, Hamza Tariq.
