The body of a middle-aged man was fished out of a Vlissengen Road canal yesterday, and police are trying to ascertain who the victim might be.
The man, who is of African descent and appeared to be in his late fifties, was dressed in cream-coloured shirt and trousers and was wearing a pair of brown Timberland boots.
He was also wearing a silver watch on his left hand. Police also retrieved a Nokia cell phone, a bunch of keys and $120 from his pockets.
Police found no visible marks of violence on the body and have surmised that he slipped into the canal and drowned.
The discovery was made at around 10:00 hrs when two boys who were passing, spotted what looked to them like a ‘salt bag’ near the western bank of the canal.
But when one of the lads threw a stone at the ‘bag’ he observed two hands in the water and realised that he was staring at a body.
He then contacted a woman who lives nearby and she called the police.
Kaieteur News understands that a security guard told police that the victim bears some resemblance to a man who occasionally passes his Vlissengen Road worksite,
The body is at the Lyken Funeral Parlour awaiting identification.
