Minister of Works, Hydraulics and Transport, Robeson Benn has appointed a Board of Inquiry to investigate the circumstances that led to an incident in which a trawler captain disappeared and four of his crew members were severely burnt while working on a vessel registered under Pritipaul Singh Investments.
The Board of Inquiry which commenced work last Tuesday is headed by Captain Ranchie Adams and comprises Lt. Commander Ron Charles, Captain of the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard; Captain Michael Tennant of the Maritime Administration Department (MAROD); Major Gary Baird, Head of the Fisheries Division of MAROD; and Amanza Walton-Desir, Legal Counsel of MAROD.
The Board of Inquiry will also examine systems of operations of Pritipaul Singh Investments as well as any other important observations.
Kaieteur News was told that the vessel, Captain Lloyd 97, registered to Pritipaul Singh Investments at Providence, had left Port Georgetown for a fishing trip to North West, Region One, Barima/Waini.
One of the injured sailors, Orlon Munroe who remains in a critical condition at the Georgetown Hospital had told this newspaper that they attempted to start the engine but a wire started to spark and the next thing, there was fire “all over”.
“I feel fire all over me body and me and the Captain run out of the engine room. I jump overboard.”
The body of the vessel’s captain Delbert Williams has not been recovered.
The other injured sailors are George Fitzpatrick, Keith Abrams and Elvis Todd.
Minister of Agriculture Robert Persaud had said that a full investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the fire and to ensure that the industry does not suffer.
He assured that his Ministry will be moving to ensure that safety standards on fishing vessels are maintained and they are seaworthy.
Minister Robeson Benn has responsibility for investigating matters related to accidents at sea.
The Board of Inquiry is expected to complete its work by next week.
