Jul 15, 2010 Letters
Dear Editor,
I write in response to the letter captioned, “Some straight talk…An open letter to Mr. Robert Corbin” Kaieteur News, July 11, 2010, by Harry Gill.
The name Harry Gill rings no bell as a member of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) and I am reliably informed he has never existed as one.
Nevertheless it is good to see Mr. Gill who is a frequent letter writer displaying interest in the state of affairs of Guyana at a time when many are ignoring the plight of the common man and self serving in eking out their own survival or power drives.
He shares the concerns held by the PNCR for Guyanese suffering under the autocratic dictatorship of the PPP.
However, in his effort to contribute to change the writer may have missed out a few very important pointers.
The writer advances an argument similar to that of a dissident faction that lost the 2009 congressional elections where more than 800 delegates exercised their franchise and more than an overwhelming ¾ of these delegates voted for Mr. Corbin’s return to leadership.
This mandate given Mr. Corbin by over 600 delegates of the PNCR remains the only valid measure of the feelings of the membership and not the beliefs of any individual or group which feels a loss from the elections or believes that his or her view best represents the thinking of the people.
To ignore this, or advance arguments which seek to disrespect this crucial element is to tell the voting members of the Party that their votes have no weight compared to the wishes of a few.
It is also suggesting that the Party be ruled by anarchy and its very structures of democracy be circumvented. Is this what the letter writer desires and what the supporters of the PNCR deserve?
Readers should remember Winston Murray said “Yes, I am prepared to accept the results, because the margin is so wide, that even if there were – as I believe there were – flaws in the process and irregularities in the procedures, it is clear that Mr. Corbin would have won.” (SN 23/8/09).
If Murray could demonstrate that he is man enough and a real game-player capable of accepting the will of the people, so too must others, including those who hide behind him and are prepared to use him to front their lawless attempt to grab power.
As a reminder for the general public, in 2009, 148 of the 182 groups nominated Mr. Corbin for leader; as opposed to 5 each nominating Murray and Aubrey Armstrong and 21 nominating Van West Charles. In 2007 when Vincent Alexander sought leadership Corbin received 180 group nominations, Alexander; 18 and Murray 1.
The groups support at both Congresses reflected the vast disparity in votes between Corbin and Murray and Corbin and Alexander. Eric Phillips, letter to the Editor (Kaieteur News 24/8/09) after the 2009 elections accurately analyses the situation as it relates to the 2009 election and I suggest that the writer and other interested parties familiarize themselves with this.
The Party remains paramount, with the Leader and its membership, without exception, held accountable for respecting the party’s constitution.
If the writer is serious about wanting law and order in Guyana he must be consistent in his efforts and not be seen as willing to support or promote disorder, disrespect, chaos and lawlessness in the very organisation that he hopes will take over from the lawless PPP.
If those who are seeking to usurp the power of the elected leader of the PNCR believe that they can violate the rule of law in the PNCR and be respected as a national force that will bring Guyana out of this era of lawlessness and criminality then they will have to answer to the electorate whether they are capable of complying with the laws of Guyana.
