A father of two is now crippled after a severe beating at the hands of four men while attending a wedding on the West Bank of Demerara.
On July 4, last, 35-year-old Gurudeo John, of Calendar Street, Albouystown, was attending a wedding at Goed Fortuin, West Bank Demerara when he was attacked by men.
His relatives said they believe that the man was attacked during a case of mistaken identity.
The man’s mother, Sharon John, said that from what she was told a man hugged her son while he was inside of the wedding house and escorted him out onto the road.
While on the road the woman said the man started to beat her son about his head. She added that by the time her son’s friends realized what was going on, at least four other person were hitting away at her son.
According to Mrs. John after her son’s friends ran to the scene the men fled. The injured man was rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital and subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
The man was in an unconscious state and only regained consciousness on Monday. He has been removed from the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit to the High Dependency Unit.
In addition to add to the family’s distress, to date there has been no charges against John’s attackers.
On Tuesday last the man’s relatives said that they were contacted by the police at the La Grange Police Station and asked to visit the station to identify his son’s attackers. This newspaper was told that after spending more than half of the day waiting at the station no identification parade was held.
The relatives say that one of the man’s friends who was present when the incident took place, was also waiting to do the identification parade but the police failed to do their part.
Up to press time yesterday John remained a patient of the Georgetown Public Hospital’s High Dependency Unit.
