Despite losing first innings points to defending champions Jamaica, Guyana remained at the top of the standings after the rain-hit second round of matches in the 2010 TCL Group West Indies Under-19 three-day Challenge ended in St Lucia yesterday.
Guyana, the only team with a win in the first round, are on 15 points after rain which washed out the entire opening session yesterday and another defiant unbeaten half-century from Kwame Crosse, helped the South Americans to hold on for a draw after a magnificent double century (204) from Jermaine Blackwood engineered a recovery for the Jamaicans who rebounded from 124-6 to reach 380.
The Guyanese began the final day on 136-7, still 244 runs away from first innings points and 106 runs away from avoiding the follow-on target.
Although the morning rain subsided, the wet condition of the Gros Islet Playing Field delayed play until 14:14hrs with the Tea break being pushed back to 15:10hrs.
The left-handed 17-year-old Crosse, who scored an unbeaten debut 74 against the Leewards in Guyana’s opening round victory, batted with Chanderpaul-like determination after beginning the day five short of consecutive fifties at this level.
Picking the ball to score from in overcast conditions and batting with the tail Crosse ensure Guyana reached the 200 mark before he again ran out of partners as the Guyana innings folded at 16:10hrs.
But by then the job of saving the game to hold onto the lead on the points table going into the third round had been completed and the game was called off without Jamaica enforcing the follow-on or opting to bat a second time.
Anthony Adams (10) and Amir Khan (9) offered some assistance to Crosse yesterday before they departed. Pacer Donavan Nelson who made 47 in a century 7th wicket partnership with Blackwood in the Jamaica innings, finished with 5-69 while Nicholson Gordon took 2-34.
Guyana, without a title at this level since 2007, battle Windwards in their next match from tomorrow.
Barbados are second on the points table with 12 points after taking first innings over the Leeward Islands, while Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago and Windward Islands are all bunched on nine with Leeward Islands in the cellar on 3 points.
