Disgraced Police constable, Kellon Kingston, 23, of Lot 33 Rosignol Public Road was on Tuesday sentenced to a total of six years in jail by Magistrate Krishndat Persaud when he appeared before him at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court.
He pleaded guilty to two charges of robbery and possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. Kingston, who was stationed at the Central Police station, New Amsterdam, and taxi driver Elroy Lancaster, 30, of 57 Stanleytown were charged with robbing Madhumatie Cush, on May 25, at Skeldon Upper Corentyne of eight grammes of cocaine, $40,000 and some jewellery.
Reports were that Kingston, who only graduated last Christmas from the police training college at Adventure, Corentyne, hired the taxi driven by Lancaster and proceeded in HA 8162 that was driven by Lancaster to a drug block at Skeldon Upper Corentyne.
There, they met the woman as she was leaving the premises with a quantity of cocaine after posing as potential buyers of the drug. The policeman apprehended the woman. The woman then quickly struck a deal with the constable. She gave him the cocaine, $40,000 and two imitation gold bangles.
Police Prosecutor, Sergeant Michael Grant told the court that after the men left, the woman contacted the Springlands Police Station and told them she had been robbed. The ranks quickly set up a roadblock near Whim and apprehended the duo in the car. Kingston had in his possession the cocaine, $17,000 and the woman’s imitation jewellery. Lancaster also had $15,000 in his possession.
In court Kingston begged for leniency. The Magistrate told him he should know better, then sentenced him to three years each count. The sentences would run concurrently.
He was fined a further $10,000 with an alternative of a further six months in jail on the narcotic charge.
Lancaster, who was also in court was further remanded to court until July 23.
