Dear Editor,
It was amusing to read a missive from a Texas resident about the Marriott Hotel project in Guyana. I am forced to ask why is this person allowed to write a column supposedly representing the interests of Guyanese women. She has only a vicarious connection to the country and has not been there in years?
Do you mean to tell me that Kaieteur News cannot find another (local) person to write this column?
Be that as it may the Texan should ask – why is it that tourists visit Texas which continues to be dogged by the most virulent red-neck racism in the whole United States?. What has she done about that?
If you do a Google search under “racism in Texas’ you get 3,100,000 hits. You may want to read an article – ‘Racism bedevils Texas town’ posted at www.chicagotribune.com where there is a (not so) shocking story of nooses and confederate flags at a company. Just give it a try.
Imagine the Texan is writing about the Princess Hotel and she has never visited the place!
For her information the Princess is a good hotel but it is not up to Marriott’s standard. I have been a guest at many Marriott hotels and can attest to the superb quality of the brand.
Incidentally, a letter from a D.C. man also caught my eyes. He wants more confrontation on the streets of Guyana. I urge the gentleman to call for the same for Washington D.C. since he lives in the area.
Let me share some information about Dennis’ current backyard. It comes dead last in education and health care in the United States; only one of four high school students actually graduate; students usually go through metal detectors at some high schools; it is plagued by homelessness; it has one of the most staggering income disparities in the world; the infant mortality rate is the same as Sri Lanka; protesters are often beaten (I have photos to prove that); it is a racially segregated city; the residents have no voting representative in the U.S. Congress.
Yet, the man lives quite happily with this. I bet you if he writes a letter to the Washington Post calling for confrontation he would end up on an intelligence list. I am certain of this and Dennis knows this to be true which is why he is silent on the condition of Washington D.C. I am also certain that the Post won’t publish it.
I will make a prediction. When the Marriott is completed you will be able to see the Texas woman there, that is, if indeed she decides to go to Guyana for a few days.
She will come back and write something positive about someone in the PPP, a predictable act of tactical opportunism.
She would then be condemned by a sixty-year-old KN columnist known for embarrassing himself at academic conferences. For now, she is enjoying his confidence.
