A 45-year-old man who is accused of attempting to commit rape was yesterday denied bail when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The man Leon Barlow was not required to plead to the indictable offence.
The allegation is that Barlow attempted to rape a female under 17 years old on July 6, last. The man who was unrepresented told the court that he knew the female, but nothing happened between them. He said that he never even saw the girl on the day she is alleging that the incident happened.
However the prosecutor told the court that Barlow told the young girl that he was from Barbados, when the two saw each other at Houston on the East Bank of Demerara.
The prosecutor further told the court that the two went to a Water Street Guest House, when an argument ensued. It was then, according to the prosecutor, that Barlow attempted to pull the girl into the hotel.
The prosecutor said that they were objecting to bail on the prevalence of sexual offences being committed.
The magistrate denied bail. Barlow is expected to make another court appearance on July 26.
