– Laud quick progress made by locals
By Rawle Welch
Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) defeated Guyana 111-99 to emerge winners of the Scalextric Model car Racing Championships which ended on Sunday, at Ray Rahaman’s residence in Rahaman’s Park.
The Trinidadian team littered with some of the most experienced players in the sport in the Caribbean was pushed all the way by the Guyanese, but eventually prevailed.
Outstanding for the Guyana team were the Ming siblings Stacy and Stanley Jnr, Elan Rahaman, Crysta Prasad, Jared Ramnarayan and Kian Jabour, while Reshad Deane, Jonelle Joseph, Rawson Samuels and Junior Joseph were the top drivers for the visitors.
Co-ordinator of the event Trinidadian Peter deMontbrun speaking with Kaieteur Sport shortly after the conclusion agreed that the series was an extremely close one with the ascendancy going back and forth over the two days and entering the last two events it was still too close to call.
“This was one of the closest finals that the T&T team has been involved in and the series was not won until the last three races and it was a ding dong battle to the finish,” deBrun said.
He acknowledged that the Under-10 and 15 players from Guyana were first class as well as the women, but it was the over-35 and Champion of Champions that allowed them to squeeze past the locals. deBrun said that they had thoroughly enjoyed the Series and being in Guyana and looked forward to many more competitions in the future.
“You’ll have a fantastic man in Ray Rahaman as well as Mark Phang and I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks on behalf of the entire team to them and all the others for all the work done in pulling off this Series,” deBrun mentioned.
He added that judging from the Guyanese performance he has already envisaged a very tight race for the title at the upcoming Caribbean Championships set for August 6-10 at Haggart’s Mall in Barbados.
The Trinidadian also extended thanks to the following Nestle Caribbean, Mings’ Products & Services, JR Burgers, Min’s Optical and Rent-a-Tent who all contributed in some form to the Series.
Rahaman speaking on behalf of the Guyana team said he really and truly appreciated the re-introduction of the sport and commended his young team on a remarkable performance.
“Our team performed creditably and I would like to personally congratulate them and hopefully this will mark the beginning of our efforts to build the sport so that the general public can get involved.”
deBrun revealed that Deane and Joseph will be the two players that will represent T&T, while Jabour and Stanley Ming Jnr are the players selected to don the national colours at the regional event.
The respective winners were U-10- Elan Rahaman; U-15- Reshad Deane; U-19- joint winners in Stanley Ming Jnr and Jared Ramnarayan; Adults- Jonelle Joseph; Ladies- Stacy Ming; Over-35- Rawson Samuels and Champion of Champions- Junior Joseph.
