Dear Editor,
I respond in relation to an article by Stella Ramsaroop and a letter by Mr. Leon Suseran.
There is no doubt that what Ms. Ramsaroop said in the main reflects the feelings and sentiments of most sane thanking human beings in the world regardless of their religious beliefs, caste, creed, class etc.
It is absolutely abominable that such perverse activities have been taking place within the Hallowed Halls of the Catholic Church with such frequency. Further, one cannot reasonably doubt that there has been a cover up of these activities over time, in fact a recent article in a leading magazine has even asked serious questions about the way the current Pope may have handled various allegations (before becoming Pope).
While it is natural for Mr. Suseran to be defensive he must realise and accept that the Catholic Church goers must ask themselves very serious questions about the conduct of their Leaders/Priests and to put systems and procedures in place to ensure that these practices are brought to a halt if not totally then substantially so.
Young children must be left in the care of these people unless there are other adults there to keep an eye. I have also had the feeling that the system of “Confessing” to an earthly mortal who has probably sinned more than the “confessor” in front of him (the Priest) a totally ludicrous procedure which should be abolished by that institution.
I will say that I am not a Christian and true enough no religion is perfect but clearly in this day and age these practices must be stamped out and the offenders sent to jail for a long time.
In closing I ask Mr. Suseran hypothetically, if the sexual abuse had happened to a child or relative of his, what would he say then?
Also if leading executives of an organisation repeatedly break the laws of the land then the whole organization will be brought into disrepute regardless of who is innocent or not .
C. Persaud
