Ramnaresh Sarwan will lead Guyana in the inaugural Caribbean 20/20 cricket tournament which starts in Barbados on July 22 and will have two new caps in his side which is missing West Indies left-hander Shivnarine Chanderpaul.
The Guyana 14-man team, which will face the Windward Islands in their opening match on July 23 at the Kensington Oval, was announced yesterday (Monday) and apart from Sarwan, Narsingh Deonarine, Travis Dowlin and Sewnarine Chattergoon are the other Test players selected.
Guyana have lost just one match in seven games in the two Regional 20/20 tournaments they have played and will be hoping to follow up their championship victory in the inaugural regional 20/20 tournament in 2006 in Antigua with their second regional 20/20 title after falling to Jamaica by one run in the semi-finals of the last regional 20/20 tournament in 2008.
Fast bowling all-rounder Paul Wintz and pugnacious former National under-19 player Jonathon Foo are the only players in the side without National senior team experience.
The side Managed by Carl Moore and Coached by Rovindra Seeram were encamped from yesterday (Monday) at Guyana’s recently constructed indoor practice facility and Hostel at LBI and are scheduled to depart Guyana on July 21.
Although the Guyana Cricket Board has remained silent on Chanderpaul’s omission, it is understood that top Test batsman, who missed Guyana’s first regional tournament at this level, has opted to play County cricket in England instead of representing his country.
Former Guyana First-Class player and USA National Lennox Cush is also in the Guyana side after being a member of the Stanford Superstars which beat England in Antigua in the US $20 million match.
The winner of this competition, which concludes with the final on July 31 in at the Queens Park Oval in Trinidad, will represent the West Indies in the Champions League Club tournament in South Africa in September. If Canada wins then the other finalist will travel to South Africa to represent the Caribbean.
Guyana face-off with CCC in their second match on July 25 at Kensington Oval before playing against Barbados in their final preliminary round match at Queens Park in Trinidad.
Defending regional 20/20 Champions Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, the Leeward Islands and guest team Canada are the teams in the other zone.
The semi-finals are set for July 30 at the Queens Park Oval in Trinidad with the third place play-off and the final are fixed for the next day at the same venue.
