Some residents of Garnett Street want the relevant authorities to help deal with an issue which is now becoming over bearing for them. Residents of Newtown said that they are at their wits end. They say that there is a building in the area which is used as a haven for drug addicts who have been tormenting residents.
One resident, Vibert Persaud, said that it was only on Monday last that he and a friend were attacked and robbed by two men who are known to be occupants of the abandoned house located at the corners of De Abreu and Garnett Streets.
According to Persaud, he was about to exit a taxi when he was approached by two men who demanded that he hand over all his valuables.
He admitted that he did not see if the men were armed but he was told by his friend that one of the men had a knife. He said between him and his friend, they were robbed of US$300.
He said that once they handed over their valuables the two men fled into the yard where the building is.
Persaud said that this is not the first time he was attacked by persons who use the abandoned building to ply their illicit trade.
He added that he has made several appeals to the City Council about tearing the building down. The owner is showing no interest but nothing has been done, he added.
Persaud said that he went as far as contacting the owners of the building but was told that the building is children’s property and that no one person can decide what can be done to the building. As it is now, the building is overgrown with weed, vines and bush and is falling apart.
Yesterday, several persons who appeared to be drug addicts were seen lurking in the compound.
