Alliance for Change Vice Chairperson and Member of Parliament, Sheila Holder, will at Thursday’s sitting of the National Assembly, seek to elicit from the Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, answers to what efforts the Government proposes to privatise the Guyana Power and Light.
The question on the order paper in the name of Holder asks, “What efforts the Government proposes to take to privatise GPL and save taxpayers the huge sums that are transferred each year to that utility?”
When asked what prompted the question, Holder explained that GPL is currently a burden to the State and the taxpayers of Guyana.
She said that while there is no public proposal to privatise she wanted to stimulate the intellect of the Prime Minister towards that end, adding that the reduction of technical and commercial losses are not on target.
The AFC Vice Chair is contending that the ailing company is becoming more and more of a burden to the State and taxpayers alike.
Holder is also by way of question seeking to clarify from the Prime Minister why there is no provision in the 2010 Budget for the setting up of the secretariat to facilitate the work of several Rights Commissions.
She is also seeking to have the Prime Minister provide the National Assembly with a status report on the failure to establish the National Procurement Commission.
The subject of the establishment of that commission has been a talking point for the opposition parties for several years now.
