Guyana’s national team presently competing at the 2010 Caribbean Junior Squash Championships in the Grand Cayman, experienced mixed fortunes on day two of the individual championships on Sunday.
Guyana is the first country to guarantee itself a title with the top two seeds in the Girls under-19 category, Keisha Jeffrey and Ashley Khalil living up to their billing by making it to the finals.
Khalil nearly missed her appointment when she was pushed to the limit by Jeffrey’s twin sister Kayla, in the semi-final which went the full five games.
Number two seed in the under-17 category Ashley deGroot fell short of making it another all Guyana final when she narrowly lost to Kristina Myren of the Cayman Islands in five.
It will be up to number one seed and two-time Caribbean champion Mary Fung-A-Fat to restore order when she takes on Myren in the final that was set for last evening.
Number one seed in the under-15 category Victoria Arjoon will be going for her fourth straight Caribbean title when she takes on number two seed Charlotte Knaggs for Trinidad, also set for last evening.
The boys will be hoping to end their two-year drought in the individual championships when Jason Ray Khalil and Jean Claude Jeffrey take on Noah Browne and Nku Patrick in the under-17 and 15 finals respectively.
The team event is scheduled to get under way following the completion of the individual competition and Guyana will be defending their boys, girls and overall team titles which they have won for the past two years.

“Discipline has to be practiced and then it becomes a habit. We all should know what is right from wrong but being disciplined does not only mean saying good morning and good afternoon but the way we focus on things that help our development,” SK Singh added.
Kumar told the youths that they should be proud of what (Shiv) Chanderpaul, who is from their own area, has achieved coming from a poor background with very little facilities.
“He showed that with hard work, dedication and commitment to what he wanted anyone could be among the best in the world in whatever they chose to be and I am glad that this programme will also teach you life skills,” Kumar said.
In response to SK Singh’s comment about him keeping his promises, Kumar informed that the National Sports Commission (NSC) continues to provide assistance for sports on the East Coast and have two paid coaches (Daniel Richmond and Latchman Yadram) working in that area. He also said he was disappointed that although tennis tables have been donated to various sports club on the East Coast many of them are not being properly utilized.
Kumar said he was pleased to see ‘a good mix of race’ among the participants and challenged the organisers to get more girls involved.
GCB official Ronald Williams said it was good to see non-cricket topics being discussed and reminded the youngsters that two Test players (Chanderpaul & Colin Croft) hail from Unity Village on the East Coast. The vote of thanks was given by Ray Barton of the EECB.
