Contingent experiences mixed fortunes
The seven athletes from the Enmore Athletics Club (EAC) to participate in the annual Hampton International Games that was staged in Trinidad and Tobago from July 2-4 have returned to Guyana with 2 Gold and 4 Silver medals in what coach of the team, John Martins describes as highly commendable.
Malcolm Walcott won the Boys Under-17 800m heat in a time of 2:04:19secs before returning later in the day to replicate that feat to take the gold medal in the boys 1500m in 4:20.9secs. Both times represent a personal best for the athlete who resides in the Betterverwagting ECD village.
Ornesto Thomas ran the Boys Under-15 800m heat in 2:10:97 and returned to register a timing of 2:10:87secs to capture a silver medal. He also copped a silver medal in the final of the Boys 1500m in a time of 4:36:92.
Calvin Belgrave won the Under-15, 400m heat in 53:84secs but finished second in the finals with a personal best time of 53:37secs.
The local athletes also won a silver medal in the Men’s 4×100 relay through the efforts of Quacy Clarke, Rupert Perry and Patrick King, all of the Guyana Defence Force and Kenneth Semple from the Enmore Athletics Club. The Memphis Athletics Club of Trinidad and Tobago won that race in 41:1secs as against 41:4 turned in by the Guyanese athletes.
Coach Martins said that he was especially pleased with the efforts of the local athletes. He was somewhat peeved over the results of the relay which he felt the locals should have won but for a technical glitch on their part.
The coach explained that GDF athlete, Patrick King, who ran the third leg, remained stationary instead of collecting the baton on the trot. This resulted in the loss of valuable seconds and the Guyana team eventually finished the race in the second place.
Meanwhile, Martins is grateful to the many corporate entities that had contributed to the team that made the trip a possibility. They include Toolsie Persaud Ltd., Mohamed Rahim & Sons and Fitness Express.
The EAC comprised of Malcolm Walcott (Boys U17, 800 &1500m), Calvin Belgrave (Boys U15, 200 & 400m), Ornesto Thomas (Boys U15, 800 and 1500m), Keith Gordon (Boys U20, 800, 1500 and 5000m), Kade Pearce (Boys U17, 100, 200, 400m and long jump) and Keith Semple (Boys 100 and 200m, Open).
