Discharge of waters not contributing to flood conditions – Min. Persaud

Agriculture Minister Robert Persaud has warned that flash flooding can be expected if there are more than two inches of rainfall at any given time.
Referring to the level of the East Demerara Water Conservancy (EDWC), the Minister said that last week, it was not above the full capacity level, but above the full supply level. The latter level, he pointed out, allows the system to have gravity supply into the different irrigation systems.
The EDWC can hold 59 GD, and last week it was measured at 57.9 GD.
Explaining that there is still some capacity, the Minister stated that it would not be wise to wait until overtopping occurs. “That is why we are doing the discharge from three points,” he said.
He further stated that the claims that by releasing the water the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority is contributing to flood conditions in the Grove and Diamond areas, are totally misleading. Minister Persaud explained that the evacuation of the EDWC and the Boerasirie Conservancy is being done so as not to add to the problem.
The discharge is currently being done from Land of Canaan, Kofi and Cunia into the Demerara River.  The level of the Boerasirie Conservancy, which is 61.50 GD, is also being reduced through outlets at Bonasika and Naamryck.
The decision was taken to reduce the continuously rising level of the conservancies after recent heavy rainfall.
The Minister has cautioned that the alert should be maintained since the current rainfall pattern is expected to continue until mid August.
