Blackwood’s unbeaten ton helps Jamaica recover

Jermaine Blackwood fashioned an important unbeaten century to lead a Jamaica recovery against leaders Guyana on the first day of the second round of their TCL regional under-19 three-day action in St Lucia yesterday.
Blackwood, a member of last year’s victorious Jamaica team in Jamaica, struck 7 fours an a six in his 166 balls innings and has so far shared in an unfinished century 7th wicket stand with Donavan Nelson, who ended the opening day on 46 as Jamaica recovered from 124-6 to reach 256-6 by the close.
Invited to bat by Guyana, who scored the only outright win in the first round when they defeated the Leeward Islands by 8 wickets, Jamaica lost Paul Palmer (1), Kemar Marshall (9) in quick succession to left-arm spinner Anthony Adams and by Lunch were 72-3 after the attacking John Campbell departed for 34 to off-spinner Jomal LaFluer.
By Tea, Jamaica, who beat Guyana by 50, also in the second round in St Kitts in 2007 when the South Americans last won the regional under-19 title, were156-6 with Blackwood 46 and Nelson on 14.
Pete Salmon (36) fell in the second session just when he was looking set for a big score but Blackwood and Nelson defied the Guyanese with confident batting as Adams finished with 3-77 and Joseph and LaFluer had a wicket each.
Blackwood’s ton was the second for the day in the tournament as Barbados’ Royston Chase his 135 to spur his team to 290-5 against the Leewards at Beausejour.
In the other 2nd round game at Dennery, Trinidad & Tobago were 52-3 in reply to the 236 made by the Windward Islands.
