The Suresh Singh Foundation of Florida, U S A, has made a second donation of US$500 to the Enterprise Community Literacy Programme (ECLP) to help bolster the continuance of a skills training programme.
The funds were realised as part of the proceeds raised at a cricket match between the Royale Sports Club and the Enterprise Cricket Club of the USA, in recognition of the contributions made by Suresh Singh towards cricket both in Guyana and the USA.
Suresh Singh, familiarly known as Andrews, was a talented and avid cricketer and sports organiser. He was captain of the under-16 school cricket on the East Coast of Demerara. He played county cricket and at the national level and was an all-rounder; an opening batsman and a off-spin bowler. Singh was a member of the Enterprise Cricket team and also a member of the Gandhi Youth Organization.
After migrating to the US in the early 1980s he was founder and captain of the Royale Sports Club, the cricketing arm of the Association of Concerned Guyanese, USA, and played in the Bronx Cricket League and later the Eastern American Cricket League in Queens, New York. He represented his team at the interleague games. In 1982 he also represented the United States cricket team at the national level at games played in Barbados. He also represented Manufactures Hanover Trust and later Chase Manhattan Bank where he was employed. He was also member of the numerous cricket softball teams in Richmond Hill, New York at various times. He was completely dedicated to the sports of cricket and committed immense time and effort to the growth of cricket in the USA.
The cricketing fraternity in the USA has lost a great leader and cricketer and friend when he died after a prolonged period of illness.
The financial contribution to the Enterprise programme was made possible through the efforts of Mr. Kris Sarabjit, and the presentation was done by Ms Debbie Hoochand on behalf of Suresh Singh’s family. Mr. Kris Sarabjit, a life-long community activists in the US, and the Suresh Singh Foundation are strongly committed, and pledge to remain a donor, to the promotion of Sports and Literacy in our community and recognised the dedication and loyalty of the leaders of the ECLP in advancing the social and educational development of the youths in particular and the community at large.
The monies will be used to establish the Suresh Singh learning centre at the Enterprise Community Centre and to provide materials and equipment for the programme, which will commence in September. The ECLP is a community based organisation that seeks to “promote a healthy life style through education, sports and leisure.” One of the main activities is the operation of a library at the Enterprise Community Centre. This library is serving the Enterprise community and its environs. It is also involved in AIDS awareness education, annual August vacation classes, hosting of the annual children’s Christmas party and the annual inter zone T/20 cricket competition. All these services and activities are offered free of cost.
The ECLP is supported by many friendly organisations and individuals, both at home and abroad. The management of the ECLP would like to thank all individuals and organisations for their continued support through the years.
The ESG of New York, the Suresh Singh Foundation of Florida, Life Springs Ministries, Giftland Office Max, Muneshwar General store, Best Buy general store, Enterprise CDC, Playland restaurant of Enterprise, Rajesh Woodworking Establishment, Ograsein Construction, Medic Aid pharmacy, Mr Flattie Singh and family, Mr David Singh, Mr Tullaram Jairam, and Slick, have all been good supporters of the ECLP over the years.
