– neighbours say fire started moments after power was restored
Frank Singh and his son Christopher stood in disbelief yesterday afternoon as their home was reduced to a blackened frame.
The 50-year-old father of four was not at home when the fire broke out around 16:00 hours and returned home in time to see members of the Guyana Fire Service doing their best to contain the blaze. He said that there was no one in the house at the time. His wife and two daughters who reside in the United States had been staying with him and his son but they left for the airport earlier yesterday. His other son who is married lives with his wife elsewhere.
According to Singh and a number of neighbours, there was a power outage for most of the day, commencing about 08:00hrs and was scheduled to end at about 16:00hrs. As such, Singh said everything was turned off in the house when he left with his family. Neighbours reported that shortly after power was restored, they started smelling something burning. Eventually one of the neighbours looked out and realised that there was smoke drifting from the Singh’s residence. The Fire Service was immediately summoned.
The Fire Service did an excellent job as they managed to ensure that the flames did not spread to any of the neighbouring homes, which are all in close proximity to Singh’s house. However, by the time they managed to subdue the blaze everything in Singh’s home was a complete loss.
Frank Singh, who is a tour operator and owner of Rainforest Tours, estimated that his business materials and his family’s personal possessions and the furniture in the home amounted to several million dollars, all of which were consumed by the blaze. In what may be one streak of good fortune for the Singhs however, the house was insured, although the contents were not.
As he spoke to the officers of the Fire Service, Singh told them that he was sure that everything was turned off since they were aware that the power would return while they were out. He also noted that they had not cooked anything in the house since they had purchased food and he was pretty sure that there was no way a stove could have been left on. He was completely at a loss for what could have caused the fire and going by what his neighbours said, he could only guess that the cause was electrical.
