Guyana’s national team made a bright start to the 2010 Caribbean Junior Squash Championships on Saturday in Grand Cayman.
The tournament began with the individual championships, which runs until today with competition in the under 13, 15, 17 and 19 categories.
Guyana has a very strong chance of winning a number of individual titles, especially in the girl’s categories where they have the number one seeds in three out of the four categories.
The first two rounds of the individual categories were completed on Saturday with the first major upset of the tournament in the under 13 girls where number two seed Larissa Wiltshire went down to the greatly improved Trinidadian Faith Gillezeau in the quarter final.
Guyana’s honour was restored when Benjamin Mekdeci took out the number two seed Danny Chesham of Barbados to book a semi-final spot in his very first outing at the Caribbean level.
The Guyanese will be hoping to increase their tally of two individual titles which they won last year through Victoria Arjoon and Keisha Jeffrey, as well as retain all three of their team titles.
